Traveling to Vienna

[Information on the hotel's site]

By plane

Vienna airport is about 20 Minutes by bus or train from the city centre. A number of low-cost airlines (and many others) fly to Vienna: It is a hub of SkyEurope and Niki, and Air Berlin, EasyJet, Germanwings fly here, too. There are a number of ways to get to the hotel: The cheapest (EUR 3.4; that includes public transport in Vienna, unlike the other options) and therefore least well-announced is to take the S-train to station "Wien Mitte" (24min). You can also take a bus (EUR 6) to station "Südbahnhof" (20min), or a CAT train (EUR 9) to "Wien Mitte" (16 min), or a taxi (~EUR 35) to the hotel (20 min). For a schedule of the public transport options input "Vienna airport" (or "Flughafen Wien") and "Vienna" into this form. More information on public transport options. See below for how to get from the stations to the hotel in Vienna.

For the adventurous, Bratislava airport is a 2-hour bus ride from Vienna, and is the main hub of SkyEurope; Ryanair flies there, too. For the bus ride to and from Vienna (Schedule), you need to make a reservation: Tel.+43 810 222333-6 or airportlines@postbus.at. This bus arrives at the subway station Südtiroler Platz. See below for further arrival information. There is another, cheaper, and faster (80=90min) bus service that arrives in Erdberg.

By train

Most trains arrive at the Westbahnhof or the SÜdbahnhof. Check this site for connections. You can also input "Taubstummengasse" or "Paulanergasse" as destinations and you will get a public transport schedule close to your hotel. From Westbahnhof a taxi ride to the hotel should cost around EUR10, and from Südbahnhof it should be less.

By car

The address of the Hotel is Wiedner Hauptstr. 27-29. Note that only short-term parking is allowed on the streets near the hotel. There is a parking garage (EUR 19.5/day) close to the hotel.

From Südbahnhof/Südtiroler Platz to the hotel

A taxi from there to the hotel would be below EUR 10. For public transport: These two stations are close to each other. From Südbahnhof you can either walk (to the west) or take tram line 18 for one station (direction Burggasse/Stadthalle) to arrive at Südtiroler Platz. There you take the subway U1 (direction Leopoldau) for one station and leave at station Taubstummengasse. You leave the station in the direction towards the front of the train you used, and find your position on the map, and walk to the hotel.

From Wien Mitte to the hotel

A taxi from there to the hotel would be about EUR 10. For public transport (EUR 1.7), you take the subway U4 direction Hütteldorf for two stations and arrive at station Karlsplatz. There you walk or take tramway 62 or 65 until you arrive at Paulanergasse (1-3 stops depending on where you get on), find your position on the map and walk to the hotel.

From Westbahnhof to the hotel

A taxi from there to the hotel would be about EUR 10. For public transport, you take the subway U3 direction Simmering, for five stops until stop "Stephansplatz", then change to U1 direction Reumannplatz for two stops until stop "Taubstummengasse". You leave the station in the direction towards the back of the train you used, and find your position on the map, and walk to the hotel.

From Erdberg to the hotel

A taxi from there to the hotel would be about EUR 15. For public transport, you take the subway U3 direction Ottakring, for six stops until stop "Stephansplatz", then change to U1 direction Reumannplatz for two stops until stop "Taubstummengasse". You leave the station in the direction towards the back of the train you used, and find your position on the map, and walk to the hotel.

The Conference Hotel

The conference hotel is Hotel Erzherzog Rainer, a 4-star hotel near the city centre and close to the meeting room.

Getting around in Vienna

Vienna has a good public transport system, so you do not need taxis or a car to get around in Vienna. The conference site and hotels are near one of the central hubs of the Vienna public transport system, the station "Karlsplatz", where three subways and a number of tramway and bus lines meet. More information on public transport in Vienna.

The meeting room is about 300m from the conference hotel; you find the area shown on this map.

Sightseeing

The City of Vienna with it's sights and cultural institutions (St. Stephen's Cathedral, Imperial Palace, the City Hall, the National Library, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Secession, Staatsoper, Burgtheater, Volkstheater etc.) is within walking distance of the conference site and hotels, and also some other sights (e.g., the Austrian Gallery at the Upper Belvedere).

Other sights are easily reachable by public transport: E.g., Schönbrunn Palace (6 stops with subway U4 direction Hütteldorf from stop "Karlsplatz" to stop "Schönbrunn"), the Giant Ferris Wheel (5 stops with subway U1 direction Kagran from stop "Taubstummengasse" to stop "Praterstern").

Currency

The Euro (EUR) is the Austrian currency.

Weather

Weather in Vienna in September is usually dry (mean precipitation in September: 42mm) and sunny, with a mean daily maximum temparature of 20 degrees C. However, we might be out of luck and get rain and temperatures of 10 degrees C, or a heat wave and 30 degrees C.
